Not all cosmetic treatments that become celebrity favorites live up to the hype. Microneedling, though, deserves all of the superlatives you may have read in beauty mags or on the Instagram accounts of influencers. Still, it’s a good idea to get answers to some common questions from an authoritative source—such as St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery—before scheduling a treatment.

1. What does microneedling do?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that creates micro-injuries in the skin using a device equipped with tiny, sterile needles. These controlled micro wounds stimulate the body’s natural healing response, promoting the production of new collagen and elastin, proteins that help keep skin youthful-looking and resilient. Microneedling can:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimize scars, including acne scars
  • Enhance skin texture and tone
  • Lessen sun damage and hyperpigmentation
  • Reduce the visibility of pores
  • Improve the effectiveness of topical skincare products by boosting their absorption

After just 1 session, many patients notice a radiant glow, and the benefits continue to improve over the following weeks as new collagen forms. It’s important to consult about your goals and expectations so we can work to get you the best results. Everyone’s skin is different, and a free consultation to plan the best all-encompassing plan will give you the confidence as we work together to achieve your beauty goals.

2. How long do microneedling results last?

The longevity of microneedling results varies based on your skin type, specific skin concern, and aftercare routine. Generally, improvements from a single session can last several months. For issues like fine lines or mild texture, results may last 3 to 6 months, while deeper scars or more significant skin concerns may require maintenance treatments for ongoing benefits. Regular sessions and diligent skincare can help extend your results.

3. How often should you get microneedling treatments?

Most patients benefit from microneedling treatments scheduled about 4 to 6 weeks apart. For general skin rejuvenation, 3 sessions may be enough. If you’re addressing deeper acne scars or more advanced signs of aging, you may require 6 to 8 sessions for optimal results. One of our providers will suggest a customized treatment plan based on your goals and the results after each treatment.

4. How long does microneedling take to heal?

Healing time after microneedling is typically quick. Most people experience redness and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn, for 24 to 48 hours. Minor flaking or dryness may occur as the skin renews itself. By days 3 or 4, the most visible aftereffects are resolved, and you can return to normal activities. However, everyone’s skin is different, and those with sensitive skin may take a bit longer to heal.

5. How long after microneedling can I wear makeup?

We recommend not using makeup for at least 24 hours after microneedling because your skin is more vulnerable to infection. Applying makeup too soon can heighten the risk of irritation or infection.

If you must wear makeup after 24 hours, choose gentle, mineral-based products and steer clear of heavy or pore-clogging formulas. We suggest waiting 2 to 3 days before resuming your regular makeup routine to ensure your skin has had sufficient time to heal.

6. Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling is generally well-tolerated by most patients. Before the procedure, our providers apply a topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort. You may feel a slight prickling or tingling during the treatment, but it’s usually much less painful than other needle-based procedures, such as injections. Studies indicate that microneedling causes significantly less pain than a standard hypodermic needle, and most individuals rate the discomfort as mild and manageable.
